Make Your Life Easier with Scuba Accessories

Once you have stocked up on your basic scuba equipment from Beuchat you should consider those little extras that could make your life easier.  There are many accessories available for scuba divers that can provide some clever solutions to issues that may come up whilst you are diving.

Here are some more accessories that you may find useful when you are diving:

-Dive Slates – dive slates are not just useful for technical dives.  These handy accessories can help you to communicate with your dive group when you are underwater.  Slates are lightweight and easy to carry and you can use them to write short messages to show your dive buddies.

-Dive Straps – keeping your equipment secure whilst you are in the water is very important.  You don’t want to lose valuable gear when you dive.  You can get a number of different dive straps that can help you to make sure kit is safe and out of the way.  Dive knife straps are essential as they provide you with a way to secure your dive knife to your arm, leg or tank so that it is easily accessible but also safely contained.  You can also buy fin straps that help keep your fins in place whilst you are kicking through the water.

-Pony Bottles – if you are going on a long or deep dive then it is a good idea to carry a backup air tank. Pony bottles are a good solution as they are smaller tanks that can be strapped to your main tank.  They are lightweight and easy to carry and have their own regulator.  This means they can provide you with a backup supply of air in case your main tank fails or runs out whilst you are still in the water.

What other scuba diving accessories would be useful?

Tools: There are some useful tools that you can use while scuba diving. Tools will help to loosen bolts and screws that you need to while scuba diving. You can get multi-tools that will allow you to do this. Multi-tools, in the style of a swiss army knife, can be easily carried in BCD pockets.

Safety equipment: Scuba diving is an extremely fun, enjoyable and relaxing hobby. However, it can also be dangerous if proper safety precautions are not taken. Safety equipment that you could use while scuba diving includes a safety sausage, whistle, mirror, knife, flag and/or float. A safety sausage is generally a compulsory item to carry whilst scuba diving. A safety sausage can be inflated by breathing into it, however, the more common safety sausage used is one that you can inflate straight from your scuba diving reg. Once you have inflated your safety sausage, you can send it to the surface to let other boats, or your dive boat, know that you will be surfacing at that place. A safety sausage is also useful for scuba diving if you get separated from your group. The height of a safety sausage (generally over 1.2m), and the high visibility colour of the safety sausage, makes it easy for your boat or other boats to find you. A whistle and mirror is also typically a compulsory item for subca diving. You will need a whistle and mirror to assist you in attracting the attention of your dive boat if you get separated from your group. The final compulsory item for a scuba diver is a knife. A knife can be used to cut yourself free of any tangles that may occur and also as a weapon in case you attract the attention of some predators of the ocean. A final important safety precaution is a dive flag and/or float. A dive flag should be flown above where you are diving, and also from your boat. Legally, no other boats are allowed within 50m of a dive flag/float. Having a float above you while scuba diving also gives you something to rest on if you get a cramp while on the surface.

Clips and lanyards: Clips and lanyards are extremely helpful for scuba diving. You can attach clips and lanyards to your BCD, weight belt etc and use them to free up your hands of cameras, torches and other handy bits that you carry while scuba diving.

Tech gear: Tech gear, like reels, is important to consider purchasing while scuba diving. If you are thinking of doing wreck dives, reels are particularly useful. You can attach the end of the cord from your reel to the entrance of the wreck, and let the scuba diving reel unwind as you make your way through the wreck. This is important as it allows you to quickly and easily find your way back out of the wreck that you are scuba diving on.

Weights and lead: weights and lead are important for scuba diving to get your weighting right and make your dive more comforatable. Weights and your BCD will help you achieve the exact right buoyancy in the water, allowing you to swim around and your chosen depth without too much unnecessary effort.
