Quality Scuba Diving Wetsuits from Beuchat

Scuba wetsuits are one of the greatest inventions of modern times. They allow divers to stay in the water much longer and also to swim in colder temperatures safely.  Scuba diving wetsuits also provide additional protection against cuts and scrapes without weighing down the body.

Wetsuit FAQ

There are so many different wetsuit products available these days you may feel a bit overwhelmed when it comes to making a purchase.  To help you learn more about choosing and using wetsuits here is a quick FAQ to get you started.

1.  What wetsuit is best for me?

This will of course depend on what type of diving you want to do and what temperatures you are diving in.  Wetsuits are sold in different thickness and lengths.  The thicker the wetsuit then the higher the thermal properties offered.  However this additional warmth can come at the cost of flexibility. This means if you are buying thicker wetsuits you should spend a bit more to get the super stretch options that can offer better manoeuvrability.

As a general guide you should try to choose the thinnest wetsuit you can.  This will give you more freedom of movement and reduce muscle fatigue.  However if you go too thin you will be cold and this can reduce your dive time.  For temperate water conditions a 2 or 3mm suit should be adequate.  If you are diving in tropical waters then it may be warm enough for a 1.5mm suit or even just a Lycra stinger suit. You can also choose shorties which are wetsuits that end at the knee and elbows.  For colder water conditions then 5mm plus wetsuits are available.

2.  What is a camouflage wetsuit?

Most wetsuits will be in standard colours such as panels of black, grey, blue and green. However you can also get special camouflage finishes. These are designed to break up your outline in the water and can give you an advantage if you are spearfishing or looking for elusive marine creatures.

3.  What are wetsuits made from?

These days you will find that nearly all wetsuits are made from neoprene.  This is a highly flexible type of synthetic rubber that is durable and long lasting.  Neoprene is manufactured for wetsuits with additional bubbles of air within the material. This adds buoyancy and increases its thermal insulating properties.   Some people can be allergic to the chemicals used in neoprene.  It is easy to get around this buy wearing a thin Lycra stinger suit or rashie vest underneath your suit.  This will also add some additional thermal properties as well.

4. How do I get the best fit for my wetsuit?

Make sure you check the manufacturers sizing guidelines before you buy a wetsuit.  Take measurements across your shoulders, chest, waist and hips to help you judge the perfect fit.  You should also try and choose super stretch neoprene options when possible as they can offer a much more comfortable fit.
