Wetsuit Booties and Socks FAQ

Your feet can be vulnerable when you are scuba diving.  They can be affected by the cold and this can make you feel very uncomfortable and cut your diving sessions short.  There are also a number of abrasive and hard underwater surfaces that could damage your feet particularly when they are soft from being immersed in the water for a long time.  This is why it is so important to protect your feet with scuba booties or socks.

You can learn more about the benefits of scuba booties and socks with this quick FAQ.

1.  What are wetsuit booties?

Booties are a good compromise between the freedom and flexibility of wetsuit socks and the durability and protection of wetsuit boots.  Wetsuit booties have the soft upper section of wetsuit socks with an additional hard sole section.  This protects the bottom of your feet from abrasive and sharp surfaces and also offers more grip for when you are moving around in the water.  Wetsuit booties are ideal for scuba diving trips when you want to protect your feet without sacrificing manoeuvrability.

2. What are wetsuit scuba socks?

Scuba socks are very flexible and provide an additional layer of thermal and UV protection for your feet whilst you are in the water.  The longer you spend in the water the colder your body will become.  This is true even in quite warm waters.  As your body cools down blood is draw up from your extremities into your torso.  This means your feet and hands can start getting very cold and numb quite quickly.  Not only is this uncomfortable but can also affect your performance in the water.  Wetsuit socks are ideal for keeping your feet warm so that you can enjoy your time in the water.

3.  What wetsuit socks should I buy?

It is a good idea to look out for wetsuit socks that compliment your wetsuit.  So for example if your wetsuit is 2mm thick then choose socks of a similar thickness.  There are a great range of different sock thicknesses on offer so you should be able to find the ones you need.  You should also consider buying super stretch or Elaskin designs are these are very stretchy and will keep your feet moving freely.

4.  What are wetsuit scuba socks made from?

There are several different types of wetsuit socks available. If you are looking for thermal protection then you can buy scuba socks made from neoprene (just like your wetsuit).  These also offer some good basic protection against scrapes and abrasions.  If you just want a lightweight sock to protect your feet from UV light in tropical waters then you can also buy thin scuba socks made from Lycra and Nylon.  These can also help to protect your feet from stinging jellyfish.
