Beginners Guide to Snorkels

One of the best things about snorkelling is that you don’t have to have any official training to get started. Snorkels are easy to use and allow you to swim in the water without having to fully resurface to breathe.  When you take up scuba diving you will be expected to be a good swimmer and have a reasonable state of fitness.  With snorkelling you can just float around in the shallows and view the amazing underwater scenery beneath.  This is a stress-free and easy way to enjoy the water.

Snorkels for Beginners

If you are just starting out in snorkelling then you don’t need to spend a lot of money on equipment.  There are some great affordable snorkels available online now at Beuchat.  You should invest in a mask and some fins as well.

-If you want to go snorkelling regularly then one of the most important considerations to make is comfort.  You need to make sure you can grip the snorkel easily in your mouth.  If you have to grip the snorkel too hard then this can be very uncomfortable after a while and can cause jaw fatigue and soreness.

-Snorkels can have mouthpieces made from either rubber or silicone. The cheaper rubber mouthpieces can be quite hard which makes them more difficult to hold and can be uncomfortable. Silicone can be more expensive but this material is softer and can provide a much more comfortable grip.

-If you snorkel a lot then you could benefit from a rotating snorkel mouthpiece. These are much easier to adjust to a comfortable position and can reduce the drag on your mouth when you are in the water.

Types of Snorkels

There are various different types of snorkels available on the market.  These range from simple snorkels which you need to empty manually through to those with purge valves.  You can also get completely dry snorkels that are designed not to fill with water at all when you go under the surface.

Think about how you want to use your snorkel before you make any purchases. If you dive down under the surface a lot then a snorkel that empties itself with a purge valve or stays dry can save a lot of hassle.  This means you can breathe as soon as you reach the surface without having to empty the barrel yourself. If you just want to float around on the surface then a standard snorkel can be a cost effective option.
