Practical Tips for Choosing Men’s Wetsuits

Finding the right fit for your wetsuit is not always easy.  You can get a head start by choosing a wetsuit that is cut to suit your gender.  Of course men are not all the same size but at least with a men’s wetsuit cut you will start off with a basic design that should suit your natural shape.

Wetsuit Basics

Men’s wetsuits are mostly made from neoprene.  Currently there are very few other materials on the market that can match neoprene for its flexibility, insulating properties, durability and affordability.  Wetsuits are often cut to different thickness within the same design.  This means you will have thicker neoprene across the main torso and then thinner material on the arms and legs.  This is because the thicker neoprene is the less flexible it becomes.  You need a certain thickness of neoprene to stay warm and by alternating thickness in the same suit you can create a better balance between thermal retention and freedom of movement.

Here are some practical tips to help you choose the right wetsuit:

-Water Conditions – you need to consider what water conditions you will be diving in before you buy men’s wetsuits.  Generally for warmer waters (above 24ºC/75ºF) a standard 2/1 or 3/2mm shortie wetsuit is ideal. This provides plenty of manoeuvrability and some heat retention. For slightly cooler waters of (around 18ºC/65ºF) you can use a 3/2 full length wetsuit. For cold water conditions (below 15 ºC/60ºF) you can buy wetsuits in thickness 4mm through to 7mm.

-Layering – if you don’ want to have to buy a different wetsuit for each season then you can enhance your summer wetsuit with layering.  You can wear a rash vest or thermal vest underneath your wetsuit to increase its thermal properties.  You can also increase your wetsuits thermal properties by adding gloves, boots and a hood.

-Support - If you find that your scuba tank digs into your back whilst you are diving then you can get men’s wetsuits that have additional padding across the back to make this more comfortable.

-The more expensive the wetsuit the more likely it is to offer you effective thermal properties and flexibility.  You should try and spend as much as you can on a wetsuit to make sure you get a durable and long lasting option. Cheap wetsuits are prone to tearing and going out of shape.  This means you could end spending more in the long run as you will have to keep replacing your suit each season.
