Find Out More about Snorkel Fins
Many people spend a lot of money on masks and snorkels and then overlook the importance of fins. It is a good idea to spend a bit more time on considering which fins would be best for you.
Fins can make a big difference to your snorkelling experiences. They provide you with an effective way to propel yourself through the water. They give you much more power and control when snorkelling or diving. With fins you can increase your swim speed and endurance by as much as 50%. This makes snorkelling so much easier and you will be able to stay in the water longer and cover a larger area. Fins take a lot of strain off your legs and arms whilst you are snorkelling. This can also leave your hands free to handle equipment such as a collection bag or underwater camera.
Types of Fins
There are two basic designs of fins available on the market, open heel and full foot fins. Whichever design you choose it is essential that they fit properly. Your fins will be working hard for you so the better the fit the more comfortable and effective they will be. Just like with any other type of footwear if they are too loose or tight they can cause blisters and difficulties in movement.
-Open Heel Fins – these are designed to fit over wetsuit boots or booties and are held in place with a strap. These are easy to take on an off and can be adjusted.
-Full Foot Fins – these have a pocket for you to put your whole foot in and are designed to be worn without wetsuit boots. Full foot designs offer good protection for your feet in the water.
Tips for Using Snorkel Fins
It can be difficult to move around on land with snorkel fins and you can damage them by wearing them on rough surfaces. Therefore you should try and put your fins on at the last movement when you are just about to get in the water. To walk effectively on land in your fins you will need to lift your feet up high to avoid tripping over them. Some people find it easier to walk backwards into the water with fins on but of course make sure you look behind you for any trip hazards.
Fins that are longer and stiffer can provide a more powerful kick. However they can also be harder to use. If you are just starting out choose a shorter, flexible blade to use until you have built up your stamina.
