What to Look for in a Snorkel and Mask Set
If you want to go snorkelling then you will need a mask and snorkel. Although you can hire this equipment it is much better to have your own. Masks can soon get out of shape with other people wearing them and this will cause them to leak and fog. You may also feel a bit uncomfortable using snorkels that other people have been using as they are designed to go in your mouth.
When you are buying a mask and snorkel set there are a number of things you do need to look out for:
-Quality – although it can be tempting to choose the cheapest mask and snorkel set you really should set yourself a decent budget. A good quality mask and snorkel set will last much longer and will be more likely to provide a comfortable fit.
-Seals – the seal around the mask the keeps the water out is known as the skirt. This can be made from rubber or silicone. The best seals tend to be provided by silicone as this is a more flexible material that can mould around your individual face shape more effectively. This can also be a more comfortable option.
-Lenses - cheap masks tend to use plastic lenses. This can be a problem as plastic lenses are more prone to fogging when you snorkel. They can also scratch more easily and this can soon affect the clarity of vision.
-Design – there are several different designs when it comes to snorkelling masks. You can buy goggles which cover just the eyes. However as they do not cover the nose as well it is not possible to equalize pressure between the two lenses. This can be a problem if you intend to dive to deeper depths. Double pane half face masks can provide good forward and peripheral vision which is great if you don’t want to miss anything during your dive.
-Breathing – with standard snorkels the barrel will fill with water if the conditions are rough or you dive below the surface. This means you will need to remember to empty the barrel before you breathe in. If you find this a problem then you can opt for a design which offers drainage devices. These will allow water to be drained using techniques such as purge valves. You can also buy dry snorkels which do not fill up with water at all.
