Choosing and Using Snorkels
It can take a bit of practice to get used to using your snorkel. It is a good idea to give your snorkel a test run in a shallow area such as a swimming pool or secluded bay. This will allow you to practice breathing with your face underwater and dealing with situations such as clearing water from your snorkel.
Basically a snorkel is just a flexible tube (made from rubber or plastic) that is gripped in the mouth. This then provides a breathing tube to connect the snorkeler to the surface so they do not have to keep coming up for air.
There are a number of different snorkels on the market. Here are a few tips for choosing and using snorkels:
-Diameter and Length – you should choose the diameter and length of your snorkel based on your body type. The bigger you are the more air you will most likely need so the larger the diameter of your snorkel should be. This will enable more air to be drawn from the surface in one breath. A longer snorkel will also allow you to go further under the surface. However they can be more difficult to use so you will need to have a strong breathing action to use them effectively.
-Mouthpiece – this is an important issue as a poorly fitting mouthpiece can be uncomfortable and cause jaw fatigue and soreness. Make sure you choose a mouthpiece that fits your mouth and allows you to bite down comfortably. If the mouthpiece is too big it will rub and you will also have to bite down more firmly to keep it in place. If the mouthpiece is too small it can be difficult to keep in place and may not provide enough air flow with each breath.
-Drainage – you can buy snorkels with drainage valves. These allow you to expel water easily. However if you are using a standard snorkel you will need to empty them yourself. You can do this by tipping your head back at the surface and then breathing sharply through the mouthpiece. This should force water out of the top of the tube.
-Snorkels and Mask – when you are buying snorkels make sure they fit comfortably with your mask. You will need to wear both together in the water so it is important they fit together.
-Transport – if you travel a lot for your snorkelling adventures you might want to consider a collapsible or folding snorkel. These are much easier to pack away and take up less space during storage and transportation.
