Is Spearfishing Suitable for Me?
Any sport that involves the sea presents a serious challenge. The sea is a potentially hostile environment and must be approached responsibly and with respect. If you are interested in spearfishing then you will need to have a good level of fitness.
Experts recommend that anyone starting spearfishing as a hobby should:
-Have a good general fitness level without any history of heart, lung or respiratory problems.
-Be able to swim a minimum of 200m without fins
-Be confident swimming in open seas
-Be confident handling weapons (knives and spearguns)
It was also help if you have an interest in marine life. This will make your spearfishing trips much more worthwhile as this is a fantastic opportunity to explore diverse underwater environments.
Competitive Spearfishing
If you want to get involved in competitive spearfishing then you will need to have reached a high level of all-round health and fitness. This is a demanding sport that can involve spending up to 6 hours in the water. This will often be in challenging conditions such as strong currents and rough seas so you will need a lot of strength and stamina in order to remain safe in the water.
Also the longer you can stay in the water the more chance you will have of bagging the best catch. This is important if you want to be competitive and get as many dives as possible in during events. Top spearfishermen follow quite intensive fitness programs to prepare for events including a combination of lap training in the pool, jogging, circuit training and gym work. It is important to keep this training going during the winter to make sure you are ready to go when the season starts again.
Getting Started
If you want to try spearfishing and you have never dived before then the first task is to pass an official diving course. There are dive centres all around the world that can provide PADI and other recognised dive courses for beginners. Once you have passed this you will then be ready to dive in open waters.
You could then choose to do a specific spearfishing course as well. This will help you to learn more about the equipment and techniques you will need. Alternatively you could join a spearfishing group and learn from more experienced spearfisherman.
Spearfishing is a great hobby sport and can provide the thrill of the chase combined with the beauty and wonder of underwater environments.
