What Spearfishing Accessories You Need
There are some great spearfishing accessories out there that help you make the most of your spearfishing experiences. Once you have stocked up on the basic gear take a look around dive shops and see what other handy accessories you could use.
Underwater Communication
Staying in touch with the other members of your dive group is essential when you are underwater. It is too easy to get separated by strong currents and poor visibility. There are some great accessories available that can help you to communicate whilst you are underwater:
- Dive Slates – these are simple and easy to use slates that allow you to write short messages to other divers. This takes communication on the next level and is an important asset when you are on dives to make sure everyone knows what’s going on. You can also use dive slates to manually work out decompression models (mostly used for technical dives).
- Dive Alarms – this is an important safety device and enables you to quickly communicate with other divers in your group if you are in trouble. Diver alarms emit both light and a loud sound signal that carries to attract the attention of your group both under and above water.
- Dive Whistles – this is a simple but effective way for you to signal to your group. Can be used if you have become separated from the group or want to attract the attention of your dive boat when you are on the surface.
Handy Extras
There are plenty of spearfishing accessories that are non-essential but can come in handy when you are out on the water. This includes:
-Knife Straps – a proper knife strap will ensure that your knives are kept safe and secure whilst you are on a dive. They are designed to strap over either a wetsuit or bare skin and will ensure your knives are easily accessible when you need them.
-Lift Bags – these bags are self-inflating and allow you to easily lift heavy loads up to the surface. Ideal if you need to recover items from the seabed or you have heavy or awkward catch bags to move.
-Fluorescent Directional Markers – if you are spearfishing in wrecks then these markers can be very useful. They allow you to identify exit areas clearly in poor visibility conditions and ensure your group can navigate easily around wreck spaces.
