Choosing the Right Foot Pocket Fins for Spearfishing
As you put your feet straight into closed heel fins you do need to make sure the foot pocket fits properly. If they are too big you will lose power when you kick as your feet with move around. You could also risk fins slipping off when you are in the water. If the foot pockets are too small the fins can rub as you kick and can increase the risks of getting cramp when diving.
Getting the right size for foot pockets is essential to your comfort in the water. Here are a few tips for get the right sizes:
-Foot Size – in general closed heel fins will be marked with regular shoe sizes. This means you need to measure your feet and make sure you know exactly what your real foot size is.
-Manufacturers Guidelines – each closed heel fins will be made slightly differently. This is why it is important that you check the manufacturer’s size guidelines before you buy. This can help you work out what fins would be best for your foot size.
-Test Run – try foot pocket fins on before you get in the water. Sit down and put the fins on with bare feet. Lift up each foot and give it a shake. Make sure the fin does not wobble around loosely on your foot or even fall straight off. Now stand up and flex your legs and feet a few times. Make sure the foot pocket doesn’t pinch your toes or rub your heels. If you do experience any problems on your test run then you need to look for a better fit before you get into the water.
-Adjustable Heel Sections – some foot pocket fins may have integrated adjustable straps. This can help you get a better fit in the water. If not then you should invest in some extra fin straps. Although closed heel fins are designed to stay on your foot you may need fin straps (used for open heel fins) if you do a lot of spearfishing. They can help to secure your fins over longer distances or in case the fin is damaged when you are in the water.
-Fin Socks – if you a problem with closed heel fins rubbing your feet and making them sore then you can get fin socks. These are just thin Lycra or Nylon socks that can be protect your feet whilst you are wearing your fins.
