Dive Knife Q & A
You cannot afford to go on spearfishing trips without your dive knives. There are a number of hazards in open water such as debris and netting that could easily entangle a diver. If you have a dive knife you will be able to cut yourself free or go to the aid of another diver in trouble. Dive knives also provide a fast way to dispatch your prey to prevent it thrashing around and attracting unwanted attention from predators.
To help you find out more about dive knives here are some of the most commonly asked questions.
1. How many dive knives do I need?
You should take at least two knives with you when in the water. You need a backup knife just in case you drop or damage the first one. This is an important safety requirement for any diver. Try to avoid carrying too many knives though as they will just weigh you down when you are hunting. Ideally you should have one sharp blade knife for dispatching prey and one serrated knife for sawing through rope, netting and other underwater debris.
2. Can you use any knife when spearfishing?
You do need to buy a knife that is designed for diving. These will be made from robust and durable materials that can withstand the elements. If you use a regular kitchen knife it will not be able to withstand exposure to salt water and could degrade very quickly. It may also not be up to the task of sawing through tough netting and could let you down when you most need it.
Always buy a good quality dive knife made from top grade stainless steel with a solid waterproof handle.
3. What handle should I choose for my dive knife?
Grip is very important when you are spearfishing underwater. You will need to choose a dive knife that can offer you with a firm grip so that you will be able to use it safely in wet conditions. Look out for dive knife with contoured rubber handles that provide a good grip. Plastic, metal and wood handles can be slippery in wet conditions so should be avoided.
4. What is the safest way to carry knives underwater?
When you are spearfishing you need to make sure your knives are easily accessible but also firmly secured in place. You can buy special knife sheaths that will strap around your arm, leg or air tanks. These are designed to house the blade of the knife fully so that you don’t accidentally cut yourself when it is strapped in place.
