Speargun Accessories Q & A
Spearguns have a series of connecting parts. Most models can be dissembled and the parts can be easily replaced and upgraded. This gives you a lot more choice when it comes to everyday maintenance and also creating the best speargun set up.
There are also many handy accessories available for your spearguns which can make your life easier. To help you learn more about accessories and caring for spearguns here are some of the most commonly asked questions.
1. Can I change the handle set up on my speargun?
If you spend a lot of time in the water spearfishing you may want to consider upgrading the handle of your speargun. You may find the handle is too large or small and so uncomfortable to use. You can buy models already fitted with ergonomic handles. If you don’t have them you could suffer from hand and arm fatigue after long sessions in the water.
If your speargun can be dissembled then you should be able to find a suitable ergonomic handle option you can use as a replacement. This should be much more comfortable to hold and can help to reduce recoil and fatigue. You can also get gun butts that make loading much easier.
2. Is there anyway to prevent corrosion on my speargun?
Top spearguns are made from high quality stainless steel. This is highly durable but unfortunately not 100% proof against the corrosive effects of salt water. To help to prevent corrosion you do need to make sure you have completely cleaned and dried your speargun after every submersion in water. This will help to remove salt from the parts and prevent it from building up and causing corrosion.
3. Are there any ways to ensure my gun fires silently?
Leading speargun manufacturers produce guns that fire extremely quietly underwater. This is important as the loud click from some firing mechanisms can scare away prey. If your speargun is too loud there are ways you can fix this.
One of the easiest ways is to insert some soft rubber into the casing at the point the hammer strikes. This will dull the sound and prevent that loud clicking noise when you fire. Make sure you test the firing mechanism a few times after you have made this adjustment.
4. Do I need spare powerbands?
You should take spare powerbands with you on spearfishing trips. The rubber is an essential part of the firing mechanism on multi-band guns. If your powerband breaks you can quickly replace it with your spare and continue hunting. Make sure you have the right length powerbands by checking the manufacturer’s instructions for your gun.
