What to Wear on Your Spearfishing Trip

It is important you stay warm and comfortable out of the water as well as in it.  In many cases you will have to travel by boat to your location. This means you will need some suitable sportswear whilst you are travelling and setting up your spearfishing gear.

Looking Good

If you are a keen diving or spearfishing enthusiasts you might want to get brand name sportswear.  There are some great classic designs from top brand names such as Beuchat available. This top quality sportswear offers high performance and great looks for when you are out of the water.

Be Prepared

The weather can quickly change when you are out on the water.  This is why it is important to be prepared. Even if the weather looks beautiful when you leave you need to take a bag with some warmer clothes just in case.  You also need to have a good waterproof jacket. There is nothing worse then getting out of the water only to have damp clothes waiting for you to change into.

Think about your spearfishing outfits in three layers:

- Base Layer – you need to invest in high quality sportswear.  This will provide you with a good t-shirt or vest top that keep you dry by wicking moisture away from your skin. This is also an important layer for trapping heat close to the skin.  If you are spearfishing in colder waters then you can benefit from specially designed thermal insulating base layers.

- Mid Layer – this is an essential layer for conserving heat.  High performance sweatshirts and jackets provide an effective way to trap air and provide warmth in different conditions. Jackets should be lightweight and flexible with a proper hood and collar to keep out the wind. It is also a good idea to opt for designs that have bright colours and high visibility patches in case of emergencies.

-Outer Layer – this is basically the foul weather gear.  You need an outer jacket and trousers made from high performance materials such as Gore-tex that will allow your skin to breathe without letting in cold air or water.   Fabric technology has come on a long way and you can get some impressive lightweight foul weather gear to keep you warm and dry when you are out on the water.

Don’t forget you will also need suitable footwear when you are travelling by boat.  You need a proper shoe that can offer protection and grip. Trainers will not be suitable as they will quickly get soaked through and may be slippery on deck.
